Coffee table, circa 1940

Coffee table, circa 1940

Baroque table of the 1940s
The circular tray in eglomerate glass is decorated with parakeets and polychrome flowers on a gold leaf background, resting on three wrought iron legs in the form of softened arabesques, recalling the full and loose of calligraphy, joined together around a strut at mid-height. It is from the World Fair of 1937 that we locate the development of this decorative trend. Perhaps in reaction to the monumental and smooth sobriety of the Art Deco of the 1930s, baroque lines and a tendency towards pastiche appear in the decorations and furniture. The 1940's Style, typically French, finds its source in surrealist art.
