Large Alabaster Sculpture "Tzigane" by Emmanuel VILLANIS (1858-1914), French school

Emmanuel VILLANIS (1858-1914)

From the research of Pascal Launay and Florian Haberey, we know that Emmanuel VILLANIS was born on 12 December 1858 at 11 rue des Os-Rongés in Lille, the son of Félix Louis Villanis, a lithographer and professor, and his wife Anne Lavioja. The Villanis family left Lille and returned to Italy after the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy by Victor Emmanuel II. Vincenzo Vicario's book and Alfonso Panzetta's dictionary tell us that Villanis began his artistic career in Italy and had Odoardo Tabacchi as his master. According to Vincenzo Vicario, he presented a bust entitled Alda at the Milan exhibition in 1881, the portrait of Silla in Rome in 1883, a statuette called Nanà and a project for a funeral monument in Turin in 1884. He presented a plaster head entitled Fischio, another entitled Studio dal vero and a plaster bust entitled Epos at the exhibition at the Brera Academy in Milan. Villanis exhibited at the Salon de la Société des Artistes français from 1886 and settled permanently in Paris, 13 rue André-del-Sarté. At the Exposition Universelle of 1889, he received an honourable mention for a plaster statue entitled "La Sourcière", and an honourable mention in 1892 at the Salon where he exhibited two plaster sculptures: Mlle Bob Walter dans son répertoire and Madeleine au Passage du Christ.

Large and beautiful alabaster print representing a bust of a young nomadic woman of Indian origin and of Art Nouveau inspiration. She is represented with her hair wrapped in a scarf, in a dress with bare shoulders, positioned with her head turned to three quarters, with a soft air, slightly absent and dreamy. Sculpture signed on the shoulder E.Villanis and titled on the terrace Tzigane, a European term for Gypsy - this work certainly captures the free-spirited, dark and adventurous woman reflected by its title.
